Football and Volleyball Tryouts

Welcome back Lancers!!

Football and volleyball tryouts will be conducted after school (2:30-4:00) on Sept. 2, 3, and 4. Please be prepared with athletic apparel, water, and a great attitude! Football tryouts will be held at the park, and volleyball tryouts at the courts. See you there!

We will have two football teams this year - bring it Lancers!!

Powder Puff Football 2008

The powder puff football game between our 8th grade and 7th grade girls was extremely intense. With her teammates blocking for her, 7th grade running back Babs Smith tore up the field, giving the 8th graders all they could handle in trying to contain her. Briana Crazy Legs Holmes (8th) and sister Ariana (7th) were unbelievable on defense, swatting down and intercepting passes. The game ended in a tie after Lyndsey Carruther's flag was pulled by Sally Olson, (pictured above) and a late-game 7th grade touchdown was called back on a penalty. A fun time was had by all! Austin, Aaron, and Jacob did a fabulous job coaching the 8th grade - thanks guys!!

Newsflash -this just in!! The 8th graders are protesting the game! (gasp) Apparently Sally Olson's eligibility is in question. More on this story as information becomes available...
Update: The investigation on the eligibility of Sally Olson is ongoing. The 8th grade girls would like it noted that the game was a TIE, not a win by the 7th graders, as stated in the year book. We'll miss you 8th grade!!

2007 Volleyball Wrap

Our 2007 Lady Lancer Gold volleyball team kept up the Western tradition by capturing another league championship and going undefeated in the process. Despite losing their setter to a broken arm immediately before their first match, the Lancers pulled together as a team and got the job done. The major contributing factor to the team's success was the unselfish team-oriented style of play. The 8th graders showed extraordinary leadership, which has set the example for our 2008 team. The Lady Lancers were also honored to received the SGVCSL Sportsmanship Award. Three members of this excellent team are now playing for Western Christian High School, two are playing at St. Lucy's, and our now-healed setter is playing for Claremont High. We wish you all the best!

Our 2007 Lady Lancer Blue volleyball had an excellent season which culminated in a league championship match against Calvary Baptist. Calvary Baptist prevailed, but our athletes played great volleyball which will carry them into the 2008 season. Coach Martina Beaton and Asst. Coach Charlene Jackson did a stellar job of preparing their young athletes for the next level.

Congratulations Lady Lancer Volleyball!

2008 Basketball Wrap

The 2008 Lady Lancer Gold basketball team won the SGVCSL championship going undefeated! The girls battled hard the entire season, playing inspired team basketball. Assists were the name of the game and the girls became so attuned to each other that their teamwork and combination play was a joy to watch. We were all sorry to see the season end. Thanks for the memories Lancers!!

Our Blue Lady Lancer basketball team had an incredible season. Coach Brent Thomas took a group of athletes who had little or no basketball experience and pulled out a memorable victory against Sunset Christian to clinch second place in league. Chiara Wilridge hit a heart-stopping buzzer beater (left handed no less) to give the Lancers their win.

Our Lancer Gold boy's team battled injuries the entire season, hampering what was anticipated to be a repeat of last year's championship. They fought hard, and we are proud of their effort under trying circumstances.

Kudos to our Lancer Blue boy's basketball team. This young group of athletes had a fine season, and we look forward to seeing them show their stuff next season. The team was comprised mainly of sixth graders which bodes well for WC basketball the next two years!

2008 Softball Wrap

Coach Ron Scheenstra coached our first-ever Blue softball team, with gratifying results. Some of the athletes had not only never played softball, but had never played any team sports. Coach Scheenstra taught the girls the skills and strategies necessary to be competitive next year. Congratulations Blue softball - you represented Western Christian well!!

The Lady Lancer Gold Softball team got off to a great start by winning the South Hills tournament. We finished a very respectable third in a strong league. Amanda Arriola's (BamBam) strong hitting will be missed next year, but we have many returners, and anticipate making a run at the league championship. Thanks to the 8th graders who put in so much hard work and were so dedicated to our team - we will miss you!!

2008 Co-ed Soccer Wrap

The members of our young Blue soccer team were tough competitors in the Blue division, and improved tangibly throughout the season. Our league honored Coach Jon and his athletes with the Sportsmanship Award, which is awarded as a result of the evaluations of opposing coaches. We are so proud of you Blue soccer!

Coach Ben Davies brought a new level of technical and tactical skill to our Gold team, and we were blessed to have him. We were in the hunt for the league championship till the end, but a strong Arcadia team prevailed, and we took second place in league. Coach Davie's extensive coaching experience was evident in the results produced - our team was playing the "beautiful game" the way it should be played - creating space, moving without the ball, and beautiful passing combinations became their trademark. Nice job Gold soccer!
